Why it matters

Hypertension affects 1.3 billion adults worldwide and is strongly linked to cardiovascular disease – the number one cause of preventable death and disability. It is often asymptomatic and is treatable with simple lifestyle changes.

Convenient and user-friendly Blood Pressure (BP) monitoring will have a transformative impact on the early diagnosis, prevention, and management of hypertension.

Current diagnostic standard – 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitors (ABPMs) are prescribed in 10-20% of patients to evaluate their BP variability during the day and night. These devices are highly obstructive and often wake the patient up, making the nighttime readings useless.

Right now, cardiologists lack effective tools to monitor how lifestyle adjustments, such as sleep, diet, exercise, and substance use, affect BP patterns in real time. Our system will provide this unique information to end users, empowering them to take preventive measures and help clinicians personalize treatment.

We develop a novel approach to monitor BP along with other vital signs using sensors worn around the core. Thus, our system is invisible, easy to wear, and robust to movement.
